New Jersey Landscape Design Project: Ringwood Sanctuary
RINGWOOD SANCTUARY
This wooded backyard used to contain only a lawn area. It is now a peaceful sanctuary for the homeowners to enjoy year round. In addition, the dogs and grandchildren love it! It became a joyful experiment to try different aquatic plants surrounded by lush gardens. Two independent aquascape systems each have long streams, waterfalls, and a pond. Both streams go around heavily planted islands that add to the ambiance. No matter where you’re sitting, whether it’s outside on the deck or inside the house, there’s a water feature to be enjoyed.
A multi-tiered waterfall adds movement to the scene, while aquatic plants and koi fish enhance the tranquil setting. The surrounding garden includes a variety of perennials, ornamental grasses, and well-placed shrubs for year-round visual appeal. Hakone grass, sedge, and a variety of annuals and perennials frame one of the many streams. Thoughtfully arranged stepping stones provide access across the water, integrating functionality with aesthetics. The space is designed for relaxation, offering a serene escape within a structured yet organic layout.
This separate water feature highlights an island surrounded by streams and a smaller pond with goldfish.
Both ponds contain caves for the fish to hide from unwanted herons. Large stepstones were added to a small irregular bluestone patio where you can view the majority of the waterscape.
Behind the smaller water feature is a peaceful, secret garden. The homeowners love to stroll down the walkway and enjoy little floral areas with magical, fairy garden scenes.
