Landscape Design Project in Green Wood Lake, New York
GREENWOOD LAKE OVERLOOK
Perched high above the majestic Greenwood Lake, this undeveloped, steep slope inspired our clients to dream of a pool with a view of the lake. Situating the pool at the proper elevation required jack-hammering and excavating large portions of the mountain.
The rocky grade and exposed ledges required extensive engineering and precise construction to repurpose the rock into a structural retaining system. This project represented the only time that our company chiseled rock from a mountain to use to create walls!
Due to a difficult site, large amounts of rock out-croppings, plantings, deck additions, hottub, we spent several days chiseling and cleaning part of the rock out-cropping discovered during excavation. However, when the client returned home from a week away, to see the rock outcropping turned into a hand-sculpted artistic feature, he literally cried with joy!
Layered sweeps of ornamental grasses, flowering shrubs, and seasonal perennials cascade over the stone walls, blending structure with natural beauty, while preventing erosion on the newly exposed steep slopes. The planting design enhances biodiversity, provides continuous seasonal interest, and anchors the hardscape into the surrounding mountain contours.

At the heart of the design is a sleek rectangular pool positioned to capture sweeping lake views, fulfilling the client’s vision of a view from both the pool and the adjacent deck. A lower deck, hot tub, multiple sets of steps and landings were installed to enjoy their unique vantage point year-round, with easy access to the pool.
