Fine gardening is where landscape design becomes living art. It’s the meticulous, ongoing care and creative shaping of gardens that elevates a property from beautiful to breathtaking. Through expert pruning, and seasonal plantings, fine gardening brings out the full potential of a landscape—ensuring it matures gracefully and thrives in every season. It’s the difference between simple plantings and an inviting garden experience.
At CLC Landscape Design, fine gardening is a signature service rooted in craftsmanship and horticultural expertise. Our team tends to each garden based on our client’s personal taste. Some clients will only have a spring start-up, which is the most essential service each year. The spring start-up includes, hand-pruning of different shrubbery according to their needs, proper fertilization for the entire year, granular weed prevention, and mulching with shredded hardwood bark mulch. Other clients will have us periodically prune and install perennials and annuals for seasonal interest. It’s like having your own personal gardener!
As a landscape design/build company, pruning is far more than maintenance—it is an essential horticultural practice that protects the beauty, health, and longevity of a landscape.
At CLC Landscape Design, pruning is approached with precision, plant knowledge, and design intention. For over 50 years, our team has understood that every cut influences how a landscape grows, matures, and performs over time.
Pruning of different plants takes place throughout the year. In our spring start-up we perform the most essential pruning of the year. Summer is also one of the more important seasons to evaluate ornamental trees, flowering shrubs, evergreens, and perennial gardens. Strategic pruning improves airflow, strengthens plant structure, enhances flowering, and preserves the architectural integrity of the landscape. When done correctly, pruning encourages healthier growth while maintaining the original design vision of the property.
Unfortunately, improper pruning is one of the most common issues we see throughout Northern New Jersey. Over-shearing, topping trees, or aggressively cutting shrubs can permanently damage plant material and diminish the natural beauty of a landscape.
At CLC Landscape Design, we believe exceptional landscapes are not only designed beautifully—they are cared for intelligently. Thoughtful pruning is one of the many ways we help preserve timeless outdoor environments for generations to come.

Hydrangeas are one of the most beloved flowering shrubs, known for their lush blooms, elegant texture, and long-lasting summer color. From vibrant blues and pinks to crisp whites, hydrangeas add timeless beauty and softness to any landscape design.
Certain hydrangea varieties can even change color based on soil conditions, creating a unique garden display. CLC’s expert designers utilize multiple varieties and cultivars of hydrangeas for their growth habits and adaptability to different areas in any garden, whether in full sun or shade. Some of the newer hydrangeas bloom all summer and even come with more drought-resistance.
